Every Silverado 1500 offers a choice between four hard-charging engines: a TurboMax inline-four, two EcoTec3 V8s, and a turbocharged Duramax diesel. They produce anywhere from 305 to 420 horsepower and 383 to a stellar 495 pound-feet of torque, depending on configuration. All four mate to a 10-speed automatic transmission, which shifts smoothly and handles well, providing a pleasant, comfortable ride both on daily commutes to Hagerstown, MD, and weekend getaways out of Cumberland, MD.
Every variant is ideal for trailering and hauling, too: everything from large RVs and campers to boats and heavy equipment. Models with the TurboMax engine can tow up to 9,500 pounds conventionally, while those with the Duramax turbodiesel can tow up to a whopping 13,300 pounds. Opt for one with a 5.3-liter EcoTec3, and either a gooseneck or fifth-wheel hitch, and you can tow up to 10,300 pounds.
The F-150 is similarly equipped, with comparable ratings. Its engine options include a trio of EcoBoost V6s, a Ti-VCT V8, a PowerBoost hybrid turbo V6, and a supercharged V8. They deliver anywhere from 325 to 720 horsepower and 400 to 642 pound-feet of torque, depending on setup, and can haul up to 2,440 pounds and tow up to 13,500 pounds. However, the high-output V6 and supercharged eight-cylinder are only available in Raptor and Raptor R trims.
The verdict: Silverado 1500 is the better value, offering exceptional versatility for customization according to your towing and hauling needs, without the need to pay a premium for a top-of-the-line model with overpowered upgrades.
